Where to Drink on Beaujolais Nouveau
We asked one of our in-house Somms, Lily Chapman (EX-Ancestrel Wines), for her best reccs on where to go if you fancy a glass next week. Here's her top 7 spots in London to celebrate all things Gamay.
Beaujolais Nouveau night is nearly here (Thursday November 21st), and London is again gearing up to celebrate all things Gamay - from the fun to the fancy. Whether you’re after a chilled bottle in a cosy corner, a wine tasting, or just a good time ending in a dancefloor, here are Lily’s best places to raise a glass to this year's vintage.
Little Duck – Every year Rory buys as many Beaujolais Nouveau’s as he can from different importers, and this is the best place to try all the different offerings, and compare. Even white Beaujolais! Not only that, but there are always other hidden gems from Beaujolais available, if you prefer something with a little more elevage. Think back vintages of Clos Bateau, yum.
Ducksoup – Bertie will have a Beaujolais list, both nouveau and old, written up on the chalkboard for the special day. Come if you are in Soho and want a relaxed dinner with good records playing, and an all natural Beaujolais list. Expect back vintages of some Beaujolais legends to make an appearance too.
Dina - If you are well over in East, Dina is the spot for you. Last year they hosted a Beaujolais Nouveau party with Decatur, and this year another great party is in the works with the same crew, so keep your eyes peeled… It will be a walk-in only event pouring the best Beaujolais around, and always such a vibe in there, not to be missed.
Lady of the Grapes – Lady of the Grapes does an amazing job at championing female winemakers, and in general just fantastic wine. They offer a wine flight of 3 Beaujolais wines, with some special snacks to compliment, and sometimes even a divine French onion soup… mmmm.
Elliots – Elliots is the perfect place to drink a young Gamay in November. They always have magnums available if you are with a larger group (or not, who are we to judge). They are a bit more selective, and usually only have 3 or 4 Nouveaus on, so you can really trust that what will end up in your glass, will be delicious and considered.
Wingnut Wines – Come here if you are in East and want a cosy little intimate wine bar, with an incredible wine list. They wrote last year that Beau Novo is their favourite day of the year! A day to share stories of their favourite wines, whilst drinking the first wines of the vintage. Expect litres of Beaujolais Nouveau, available to drink in or takeaway.
All good – Karen has just taken over the old Weino BIB spot in Dalston, and she is a self proclaimed Beaujolais lover. Again this year, she’ll be selling £4 glasses of Beaujolais all day in honour of the special occasion, and not small ones at that! Guaranteed good time here, with no pretentiousness.
