Provence Rosé lovers will love these darker alternatives.
Our Lily is revolutionising your summer wine drinking situation, send this to the Provence lover in your life.
There is a misconception that all dark roses are sweet. Apart from the white zinfandel your mum drank in the 90s, its not actually true. I’m not saying I don't enjoy Provence, I enjoy a pale glass of girly whirly drink as much as the next person, however there is a place for dark rose, yes, even during the hot summer months. Dry (yes you heard me) herbaceous, savoury and with so much more complexity than a pale rose, why are we all so afraid to drink the strawberry, cranberry coloured wines? I guess the colour makes us think of squash or pop, but it only means the skins have been in contact with the juice a bit longer, it does not mean more sugar!
You can, and should also venture away from French roses, think Sicily, Piemonte, Catalunya and even Austria, roses from here have such freshness, and although they sometimes have sweetie, ripe fruit flavours, they are still dry, and actually sometimes are more exciting to drink. I have complied my 6 fave roses that will be as equally satisfying, and delicious - if not more - than a bottle of chicken wine.
Valli Unite - "Valli Rosa”
Ancestrel Wines - a crisp and floral rosato from Piemonte, made from Barbera and a blend of white grapes. This is great value for money and even my mum loved it!
Vino di Anna - "Jeudi 15 Rosato"
Les Caves de Pyrene - A wine made on Mount Etna in Siciliy, from Nerello Mascalese. Wild strawberries, and tomato, there is such freshness in this wine, one of my all time faves.
Vinyes Singular - "Sumoll Rosat Amphora"
Wayward Wines - a home hospitality favourite, 100% sumoll from Penedes, aged in amphora for 2 weeks, tastes like sour cherry and and lime, but still with salinity.
Clos Lentiscus - "Croac Croac"
Ancestrel Wines - a litre of rose whats not to love. Another great wine from Catalunya, this time its Tempranillo and a little Xarel-lo, this is funky, slightly more unusual for the serious natural wine drinkers.
Nibiru - "Loss & Lehm Rose"
Modal Wines - the phrase glou glou gets thrown around a lot but this Zweigelt blend from Kamptal represents the phrase in its truest form - big ripe fruit, berries but with subtle spice and minerality - its so easy to drink, and great value
Nino Barraco - "Rosammare"
Tutto Wines - hard to find, and something very special. Young nero d'avola from Marsala, with high acid, and a salty finish, if you drank this beaut with your eyes closed, you’d think it was a white wine I swear.
Enjoy
