"No-one wants to work anymore" debunked
Throughout this series, I will dig into the key reasons why more and more people are less keen to take a service focused role, and crucially, what their owners/operators can and should do about it.
After almost six years running my business, I am fortunate to have been able to listen to the stories of thousands of people within hospitality. Running alongside the familiar backing track of ‘things are improving’, I hear the reality, and that’s that nowhere near enough is. There aren’t many people better placed than myself to cite the woes of the people at the heart of our industry, by that I mean those working ‘in service’ - and crucially, how to make their lives remarkably better. It could be solved in short by following the age old phrase ‘Don’t be a dick’, but being a dick comes in many forms and looks like many different things to everyone, so if you’re interested, keep reading and I’ll do my best to tell you my thoughts, for the benefit of us all.
‘No-one wants to work anymore’, the use of this phrase has slowed right down, it shows your age and it claims that an entire generation hold the same values and hold work in a similar regard. If you change it to ‘no-one wants to work 60 hour weeks anymore for normal pay and rarely get to see any of their ‘normie’ friends or family and barely get to see day light for days on end’, then it starts getting a little more accurate. ‘In service’ positions are without question less popular as the years go on. Years generally and in people lives. Throughout this series, I will dig into the key reasons why more and more people are less keen to take a service focused role, and crucially, (because no problem should come without a solution), what their owners/operators can and should do about it.
As someone who has worked through each layer of management within hospitality, I have been on the employee and employer end of this. I too have exploited those who work for me, without realising. I have put those who aren’t interested in completely dedicating their souls to the job in the box labelled ‘work shy’. So I intend to share with you how my entire mindset has shifted on this matter and how I would have done it all very differently if I had the chance all over again.
This is interesting across other sectors where there are similar expectations too! Looking forward to reading more
